Do Titles Really Matter in Private Service?

Private service can look glamorous from the outside—but those who work in it know a different reality. Titles don’t make you exceptional. The work does.

In this industry, the most respected professionals are the ones who never stop learning. It doesn’t matter how many years of experience you have—there’s always something new to pick up, whether it’s from a vendor, a housekeeper, or a chef.

I’ve worked with people who have spent decades in private estates and still ask questions, still research, still refine what they do. Chefs who have cooked for some of the most influential clients continue to experiment and improve. Housekeepers constantly find better ways to care for materials, finishes, and spaces. That mindset is what keeps people growing—and what sets them apart.

If you want to succeed in private service, you have to understand every part of the home. Not just from a management perspective, but by actually doing the work. Use the equipment. Learn the systems. Pay attention to the details. The reality is, no task should be beneath you.

One moment you might be overseeing a multi-million-dollar renovation, and the next you’re fixing a disposal or troubleshooting an appliance. That ability to shift gears without hesitation—that’s where real value comes from.

Over the years, I’ve seen people grow into leadership roles in ways that are earned, not given. Nannies becoming Directors. Housekeepers becoming Estate Managers. What they all have in common is simple: they never let a title define them. They took the time to learn every role, and because of that, they lead with understanding and respect.

Why does this matter? In homes where expectations are high and discretion is everything, ultra-high-net-worth clients are not looking for titles. They’re looking for people they can trust. People who are capable, adaptable, and willing to step in wherever needed.

In the end, the best leaders in private service are the ones who have done the work themselves.
